Book Review: China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians #2) by Kevin Kwan

This is the second post in my Crazy Rich Asians series review. Find the review to the first book here.

This is probably one of the longest reviews I’ve done, but I really have a lot to say. Just so you know, there are some possible spoilers ahead.

About the Book

On the eve of her wedding to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia, Rachel should be over the moon. She has a flawless Asscher-cut diamond from JAR, a wedding dress she loves more than anything found in the salons of Paris, and a fiance willing to sacrifice his entire inheritance in order to marry her. But Rachel still mourns the fact that her birthfather, a man she never knew, won’t be able to walk her down the aisle.

Until: a shocking revelation draws Rachel into a world of Shanghai splendor beyond anything she has ever imagined. Here we meet Carlton, a Ferrari-crashing bad boy known for Prince Harry-like antics; Colette, a celebrity girlfriend chased by fevered paparazzi; and the man Rachel has spent her entire life waiting to meet: her father. Meanwhile, Singapore’s It Girl, Astrid Leong, is shocked to discover that there is a downside to having a newly minted tech billionaire husband. A romp through Asia’s most exclusive clubs, auction houses, and estates, China Rich Girlfriend brings us into the elite circles of Mainland China, introducing a captivating cast of characters, and offering an inside glimpse at what it’s like to be gloriously, crazily, China-rich.

My Review

Okay, I’m not going to say that this book was bad, because it wasn’t. It was still entertaining and I loved the dramatic ends to some sections as they drove the plot forward and kept me interested in the book. So this book was definitely not boring: it could very well be a one-sitting read (I just couldn’t because I started reading it at school).

The thing is, some of the plot seemed like it was missing and some actions seemed really random. Eleanor Young was practically missing from 3/4 of the story. No mention, no calls, no nothing–disappeared from the story without a trace. Like, where did she go? It also seemed unrealistic that she’d suddenly approve of Nick and Rachel’s marriage so fast, considering what her character was like from the first book. *Keep in mind that the book plot is different than the movie*. I get that she wasn’t a huge part of the main plot for this book, but seeing that this is a series, I’d expect some of the biggest parts of the first book to still carry through. But she was only in the first bit of the book, and mentioned in the last section.

Also…maybe it’s just me not reading carefully, but Kitty Pong and Jack Bing? Where did that come from? I did not see any development of that at all and suddenly she’s his girlfriend. First of all-gross-because I’m pretty sure there’s a huge age gap. But really, where did this come from?

The ending of this book was also really sudden–I didn’t quite know how to make of it.

I think Astrid’s character plot line was really well done though. Her relationship with Micheal progressed logically, and I genuinely truly felt sorry to see her suffering through all that she went through. Astrid is such a good character, probably my favourite even, and she deserves so much better. I’m excited to see what happens with Charlie and her in the third book.

Also, Kevin Kwan does it again with his super unexpected plot twists and lush descriptions of the elite life. This was probably the best part of the book.

Overall, there were some very nice things about this book, but I just didn’t like the story as much as I did the first one. According to Goodreads, the third book seems to have slightly better ratings than the first two, so I’m really hoping it pulls everything together with a bang.

I absolutely loved the movie for the first book, and the next movie is supposedly coming out in 2021 I think…from what I last read. I’m excited to see where they take it, as there are some pretty big spots where the two storylines kind of diverge.

  1. I’ve read Crazy Rich Asians but I haven’t read this book yet, and I don’t know if I will. Book 1 was good, and a fun read, but I’m not sure if I want to invest time and energy into reading the second and third books, as I didn’t LOVE the first book. Thank you for your review!
