Creator Column: Starting An Online Clothing Boutique With Tori Haughey

Guys, I’ve got one of the most amazing clothing stores to share with you! I absolutely love supporting small businesses, and the Sweet On You Boutique was one that caught my eye. It’s founder, Tori Haughey, reached out to me on Facebook after seeing that our missions aligned: her store’s goal is to empower women to feel confident in their style and skin, while I also want to inspire self-confidence through my blog!

My Picks

After looking through Sweet On You Boutique‘s products, I absolutely fell in love with the store! If only they shipped to Canada, aha (hopefully real soon!). This is a store that I would genuinely buy from–their products are actually super cute. I went and found my top picks to share with you guys here!

Tori also graciously provided an exclusive discount code for you guys so you can take 15% off your purchase when you get these goodies! Just enter the code HEDY15.

**Please note that this coupon code can only be used once per customer and to U.S. residents only, since Sweet On You Boutique currently only ships within the United States (but they’re hoping to expand their shipping to other countries in the future)!

Because Valentine’s Day is coming up…here’s my pick from their Valentine’s Day collection. Such elegance!

I love this top! And it’s on sale too!

Cream Tassel Bell Sleeve Crop Top

I love rompers and dresses! These are both $26 ($52 50% off!). What a steal!

Since the last two were summery weather looks, I found a cute sweater too. I’ve been looking for one that had the bubble sleeves and relaxed turtleneck for a while, and this one looks perfect!

Mauvelous Turtleneck Sweater

Gotta love accessories! This bandana adds the perfect touch to an outfit.

An Interview With Tori

I got an amazing opportunity to pick Tori’s brain and find out more about what went into building her boutique, as well as how she was able to become so successful in her creative entrepreneurial endeavours. Her responses were really inspiring–be sure to read it!!

A lot of people want to start their own clothing shop or brand but don’t know where to start at all. What are some of the “behind the scenes” things that go into starting a store (suppliers, setup, etc.)?

There are many “behind-the-scenes” things that go into starting a store, especially one that is online!! Some things include creating a website, shopping for quality merchandise to buy from wholesalers, styling new pieces and putting together outfits, photographing items for the website, and creating marketing content and campaigns (just to name a few)! A lot goes into running a clothing store, but it is all so fun to work on every day!

You majored in entrepreneurship in college–how has it helped you in your business?

Majoring in Entrepreneurship has helped me in so many ways! From filing legal paperwork to developing different marketing strategies, Rowan University’s Entrepreneurship program has taught me the steps needed to start and grow a business. When I first got serious about opening my online boutique, I wrote a 20-page business plan for myself. As I was going through the steps of opening my store, I remembered everything I learned in college at Rowan University. It really assured me that I was taking the necessary actions towards my dream business.

How do you get motivated when facing a roadblock or discouraging time?

When I face a roadblock or discouraging time, I get the courage to start again when I remember my “why”. I think this might be the number one driving force that keeps me motivated. I simply think about why I started Sweet On You Boutique in the first place. I have always wanted to pursue my own passions and turn them into a career for myself. I’ve wanted to create a life I love, doing what I love. And, most importantly, I have wanted to inspire women to feel confident in themselves to do the same. I constantly think about how much I want my business to empower other women to believe in their dreams and to act on them. This thought alone is what gives me the clarity and will power to keep going in moments when I feel like I can’t.

You also have a rather successful Youtube channel with over 33k subscribers! How do you balance all of your creative projects (and do them so well ) and make time for everything?

It’s hard! I’m honestly still learning how to balance and make time for everything! I work a day job, so I really only have nights and weekends to work on my boutique and creative projects. It can really be difficult trying to manage my work/boutique-life balance. What I do is set goals for things I want to accomplish each day, and I prioritize them based on what is most important. I also find that I stay motivated to work towards my dreams when I remember my “why”, create a routine for myself, listen to inspirational podcasts, and connect with others in my field. However, at the end of the day, business and work are not the only things life has to offer. So, I often give myself grace, and I take breaks to enjoy the little things in life. I allow myself time to really connect with my family and friends, especially when I need it!

Many people struggle with marketing and getting customers when running a business or building a presence online. What advice would you give them?

My best advice for marketing and getting customers when running a business or building a presence online is to be consistent! Consistency is key! Even on days when you don’t feel like working, you have to continue to show up for your audience. Be active online, post often on social media, attend networking events, join Facebook groups, meet new people, etc.! These are the things that will help you get your name out there, and that is so important when growing a brand.

What’s your favorite item from your store?

My favorite item in my store right now is definitely our new Merch shirt, the Live Laugh Self-love Tee!! I’m a sucker for graphic tees, but this one is special because I designed it myself! The message behind my brand is to empower women to feel confident in their style and skin, and I think this shirt really resembles that.

What is your vision for your store 5 years from now?

5 years from now, I hope to have a mobile shop for Sweet On You Boutique, a warehouse and office space for our merchandise, and an expansion of our online store so we can sell to other countries outside of the United States!

Just for Fun

Heels or flats?

Flats, but more like converse!!

Favorite city in the world?

My favorite city is Philadelphia!

If you could spend a day with a famous person, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I think I would spend the day with Ellen Degeneres because she seems like such a positive and fun person to be around!! I’d ask her how she got started in her career and what it feels like to be able to give back and help so many people!

Favorite season?

My favorite season is definitely Fall! I love the weather, fashion, and festive activities (pumpkin picking) during this season!

**Please note that this coupon code can only be used once per customer and to U.S. residents only, since Sweet On You Boutique currently only ships within the United States (but they’re hoping to expand their shipping to other countries in the future)!
